The Library of Letters was established in 1949 by merging eight existing libraries attached to the faculty's departments and seminars. Most of the publications (out of 37,950 volumes) were donations from professors Gh. Bogdan-Duică, N. Drăganu, Ion Breazu, Sextil Pușcariu, Șt. Bezdechi, N. Bogrea.
In 1954, the Library of Letters merged with that of the Faculty of History and that of Pedagogy.
In 1959, when the "Babeș" University merged with the "Bolyai" University, the life of the library was strongly influenced. The philology collections were separated from the departments that had been merged in 1954 (history and pedagogy) and moved to the faculty building at 31 Horea Street, where they are still located today. The seven departments are spread over four floors:
- ground floor: Romanian and Hungarian loan department; Spanish and Romance philology department;
- first floor: Romanian-Hungarian department (reading room);
- second floor: French, Italian, classical philology (Greek and Latin) department; reference room;
- third floor: Germanic, Slavic, Chinese, Japanese languages department; periodicals department.
After 1990, a new - obviously beneficial - stage began in the evolution of the faculty library. The number of readers and that of volumes consulted increased significantly, as a result of the establishment of new departments. The publication fund was enriched through exchange and numerous donations from the country and abroad.
Collections:
- Books: 331.993 volumes
- Periodicals: 26432 volumes
